Emerson selected for Turkey plant upgrade project

Emerson Process Management is to provide technology and services, including the Plantweb digital plant architecture and Ovation control system to automate two units of the Ambarli power plant.
The units are being updated by engineering contractor EPP to help the company meet increasing demands for electricity in Turkey and the contract is part of a rehabilitation and full repowering programme that will improve performance, reduce environmental impact and increase total plant output by 516MW.
The oil-fired units four and five are being converted to natural gas with the installation of two new combined cycle gas turbines and modern heat-recovery system generators, and the rehabilitation of two existing 150MW steam turbines.
Emerson was selected for the automation contract based on its industry experience in  retrofitting turbines, and ability to provide a complete solution and specialists from the company will manage the automation project and be responsible for the design, procurement and installation of all instrumentation and control systems, as well as overseeing the commissioning and start-up of both units, scheduled for April 2012.
Emerson's Plantweb digital plant architecture with Ovation control system will replace the existing outdated controls.
The Ovation system will directly control each unit's steam turbine and balance-of-plant processes and equipment and interface with the gas turbine control systems, enabling all inputs to have a common platform for operators to work from. The system will oversee automatic unit start-up/shutdown and automatic unit operation within the full range of load changes.
As part of the Plantweb digital architecture, Emerson will also install a range of instrumentation, including its Rosemount measuring equipment. Using open standard IEC 62591 WirelessHART technology, an Emerson Smart Wireless network will connect Rosemount wireless temperature transmitters and CSI wireless vibration transmitters.
The company's CSI 65000 machinery health monitor will provide vibration, thrust, eccentricity, differential expansion, and phase measurement as well as over-speed protection of the turbines.
The HART communications protocol will also enable Ambarli plant operators to access the predictive intelligence of the field devices through Emerson's AMS Suite predictive maintenance software, which is designed to optimise plant performance, improve maintenance and avoid unplanned downtime.
